Russian Brides In America

The so-called mail order brides from Russia are rather popular in western countries nowadays, especially in America. Another friend of mine, who is an American, is just expecting his Russian bride to arrive in the USA, where they intend marry. Meanwhile, he has made his mind to share his concerns and doubts, which such rather typical situation of these days inevitably triggers.

From their very childhood Americans are being taught two major principles concerning marriage. Firstly, the marriage is a partnership. Which means that marriage partners have no other option than to continuously try outperform each other: you have to win against your marriage partner unless you wish her to win against yourself. Therefore an American husband will do his best to ensure that his new Russian wife remains completely dependent upon him and that for as long as possible she stays ignorant of her rights, the rules in effect in the country of his residence, as well as of the local laws and customs. He won't move his finger to help her learn or improve her poor English, get her driver's license, get hired for a well paid job if any job at all, have her residential status upgraded etc. The point is that expanding his Russian wife's position automatically weakens his domination, while the rest of the considerations are of little concern for him.
